You First

The first time that we realized that a significant portion of this book would involve journaling in the book, we thought, No.  Writer playin' us fuh chumps!  Then, we received the book, saw how beautifully it's designed and perused the author's credentials.  Okay.  Maybe we are dumb to make such instantaneous decisions.  Yes, temporarily dumb.

Then, we sat down to peruse this piece and there it was.  There it was on page thirteen.  This is what we have been preaching to the many care-takers that we know.  You know who they are.  They are always sick with something, or are between illnesses and they always put themselves last on the list of needs.

You First

Anyone who surely has a doctor's prescription may precede the care-taker, in any manner possible.  We love the caretaker's and we know what they need to get well.  But, they don't listen.  They're always the first ones to expire too.

Michele is reaching past the care-takers.  She is writing for us, she is writing for you.  Many of us can be care-takers to some degree.

This is what she ends page thirteen with;

It's that whole principle that you should put on your own oxygen mask in a plane before helping others.

Yes!  Sighing...yes.  That's what we have been saying, all along.  Just, help yourself first.

Oh, yeah.  Well, that's probably what the title is about.  Huh?

You First is easy reading.  Well, the writing is easy.  The work can be a real gut punch.  In fact, we realized in chapter 1 that this book was not for us.  Please, do not misunderstand.  We are not wimps when it comes to getting into counseling (two years) and psychotherapy (two more years).  We bear no shame for doing what we needed to do.  It was our idea to go and we did it and would do it again.

Michele covers all of the basics.  She begins with family roots, physical exercise and diet and nutrition.  She does this right there in chapter 1.

You First is an excellent book.  We really can't stress that enough.  It comes in a pretty package.  You just have to work after having received it.  It won't be easy, for some of you.  And, that's okay.
