The year is 1928, when people were not enjoying a terrifically long life span anyway. However, for those slogging it out underground, their lives were even shorter. Living above ground was difficult as well, considering the clouds of coal dust. According to the town's only physician, Doctor Stone, common physical maladies included asthma, bronchitis, the flu and pneumonia.
As Hawkins does the investigative thing, he uncovers more sinister deeds than he bargained for. Involved is Rose, a town harlot, Danny the train dude and the mob. Abortion is at stage center and it has vascularized. Not only does it happen, but, it happens a lot.
We all know from having read the book's cover that a hero is involved. So, who is it? Hawkins, the reporter with a penchant for easy broad's? Doctor Stone, the Catholic non-abortionist? Is it Rose?
